The 7200 Class were rebuilt from engines of the 4200 Class 2-8-0T engines which had limited coal and water capacity for working coal trains on the short journeys from the pits to the South Wales docks. When this trade was greatly reduced in the depression of the 1930s, some of these surplus engines were provided with additional coal and water capacity to run on the main lines and replace some of the elderly 2-6-0 "Aberdare" Class. 7200 was completed at the Swindon Factory in the UK on the 20th July 1930 but did not enter service and remained in Swindon stock. She re-entered the Factory on the 23rd July 1934 for alteration to 2-8-2T arrangement, which cost £200. Somehow during this period she achieved a mileage of 1,408 miles. Her original building cost was £4,380 which included £933 for the boiler.

She was withdrawn from service on the 8th July 1963 and was subsequently sold as scrap metal to Woodham Brothers, Barry Island, Wales. She was later sold to Quainton Railway Centre, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom where she arrived in September 1981, and repairs were in progress in 1992. Below are some technical details about the 7200 Class 2-8-T Goods Engine.
